CIEMAT leads the Spanish programme for the Fusion Nuclear Science and Technology from the National Fusion Laboratory (LNF) department. The main goals of the Spanish fusion programme are: the development of the “stellarator” concept, through the exploitation of the TJ-II device, the participation to the large world fusion experiments (JET, LHD, W7X, ITER) and the development of  knowledge and technologies base for DEMO and the Power Plant. For this purpose, CIEMAT drives some specific research programmes like the Technofusion project and the Consolider Tecno_Fus programme and plays an important role in the IFMIF EVEDA project.

The main research areas in the Spanish Fusion Technology Programme are:

Materials Technology, including experiment and modelling for functional and structural materials

Development of components and systems for the IFMIF accelerator

Design of the IFMIF irradiation test cell

Blanket technology including predictive tools development

Remote handling

IREC (Catalonia Institute for Energy Research) was created to contribute to the objective of creating a more sustainable future for energy usage and consumption, keeping in mind the economic competitivity and providing society with the maximum level of energy security. This contribution will be done through scientific and technological development.

In order to fulfill the scientific and technological aims in the field of Fusion Energy, the Barcelona Fusion Center (bFUS) programme was conceived.

The main activities of the bFUS scientific programme are the following:

Fusion Plants Technologies: integral design, socio technical studies, security and RAM analysis.
Development of specific Facilities: superconductivity laboratory, advanced components for helium refrigeration and hydrogen isotopes processing
Development of Breeding Blankets: contribution to the European TBM programme.
