PURPOSE AND CONTENTS

This workshop will cover the brain anatomy and function necessary to plan and perform functional surgeries for brain tumors located in eloquent areas, and for functional deep brain stimulation procedures. The anatomy will be studied in cadavers using Klinger’s white matter dissection technique. Also, the tools necessary to perform these operations will be practically covered, and translated into the anatomical dissections whenever appropriate, specifically transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), preoperative planning with tractography (DTI) and neuronavigation, cortical and subcortical stimulation and microelectrode recordings. During the workshop each pair of participants will have a cadaver brain for the dissections and one Medtronic planning station with the StealthViz/DTI software.
