Dr. Borowski graduated in 1996 from the Medical School of the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, in his native Germany. Following an elective attachment at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he completed his core surgical training in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the North-East of England. Between 2002 and 2004, Dr. Borowski completed his postgraduate research at Newcastle University with the award of the medical doctorate (MD) on the topic of “Effect of Surgeon and Hospital Factors on the Outcome from the Surgical Management of Colorectal Cancer”. He continued his higher surgical training in the Northern Deanery, followed a post-specialisation fellowship in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. He was appointed as Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at the University Hospital North Tees in Stockton-on-Tees in 2011, and is department lead for undergraduate teaching, as well as research and development.
Dr. Borowski’s specialist interests include the pathology and treatment of colorectal cancer, laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques, treatment of pelvic floor disorders, surgical outcomes research, clinical audit and regenerative surgery. He has published more than 40 national and international conference abstracts and presentations, and more than 25 peer-reviewed publications to-date. Dr. Borowski is member of the Cochrane Collaboration’s Colorectal Group, fellow of the Association of Coloproctology (Great Britain and Ireland) and fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. He is furthermore on the editorial board of the British Medical Journal (Case Reports), and peer-reviewer for several journals including the British Journal of Surgery and Gastroenterology.
